ABOUT ME
Hello and welcome to my portfolio page! I am Robert, a game designer from Enschede. I focus on system and mechanic design, and value quick prototyping and iteration. I also value offering quick and convenient documentation that allows my teammates to easily and efficiently find info or edit info on the fly, letting them focus on their own work.
As a designer, I work structured and analytical. I have found a lot of value in the analysis and testing of concepts and problem statements, and have found it to help my team iterate and progress efficiently in the design process while avoiding wasted time.
GROUP PROJECTS
Monster Rush
Monster rush is a 2-4 player competitive racer, made for younger audiences. Players run through a long 2.5D level, using traps, pickups and their own monster-specific abilities along to way to boost themselves or hinder their competition, all in order to reach the finish first and get out on top. My focus was on mechanics and level design and iteration.
Safe Passage
During this 3 week project, we created a 2 player co-op puzzle game for mobile where the players must work together to navigate ships to their own harbour. Player 1 takes the role of the ship spotter, keeping track of ships and their environment and communicating this info to player 2, the ship coordinator, who has to steer the ships towards the correct harbours while avoiding obstacles only the spotter can see. For this project I was mainly responsible for system & mechanic design, as wel as level design and implementation.
Fire, Begone!
Fire, Begone is an educative puzzle game I made with a group of seven, where you play as a wizard that has to fend off fire spirits that have started spawning and creating a ruckus in his home after he ignores fire safety rules. The goal of the game is to teach players how to deal with different types of fires in a fun and interactive way. My tasks included audience research, project Planning and mechanics & puzzle design.
Tech Rat Redemption
A physics based puzzle game where you need to lead an electrical orb through the shafts of a labratory by hitting is from al sides using a richocheting bullet. As this we only had ten days to complete this project, quick prototyping and iterating was key. The project taught me a lot about efficient time management and the importance of role assignment and communcation. I was responsible for mechanics, puzzle and narrative design.
The Unwanted Haunted
For this point-and-click puzzle game, I worked in a small team of six and alongside one other designer, I was in charge of story, level and mechanic design as well as prototype testing. It was an interesting challenge as I had little experience with these types of games, and it was interesting to research what makes these kinds of games fun to play.
PERSONAL PROJECTS
Robo Freerunner
Robo Freerunner is a solo-project I worked on during my second term. It is a 2D puzzle-platformer that revolves around red & blue platforms that activate and deactivate whenever the player jumps. Robo Freerunner was a very fun project to work on. Since it was a solo endeavour, I was also in charge of programming and art. This allowed me to get more insight on the work of engineers and artists, which has helped me out a lot in later group projects. So try it out on my Itch.io!
A Tale of a Goblin and His Cats
This is a short solo project I worked on. It's a small and light-hearted choose-your-own-adventure game where you tag along with a goblin to go confront his old boss. It was a fun excercise on creative writing, story plotting & dialogue writing!
It's only around 10-15 minutes and doesn't require any downloads!
So if you'd like, check it out here!
